Role Playing

Place students in the position of relevant decision makers, coach, interviewer or interlocutor forcing them to apply the content to determine a diagnose or solve a problem in a staged setting.

Optionally: When using Traintool students could feedback each others roleplaying. Students perform their roleplay together and record it. Afterwards they upload it through Traintool. Peers provide these two students with feedback. More information regarding Traintool can be found here.

On-campus

The activity takes 30 to 60  minutes and could be done with maximum of 60 students in an on-campus tutorial session.

It could be used as a blended learning activity. When students prepare the performed case at home. Otherwise the option using Traintool could be used, when students roleplay in their own time.

Manual

Supplies Needed

  • A case which students have to role-play
  • Optionally: Traintool

Set-up Classroom

This learning activity could be done in all types of classroom set-up, such as traditional set-up or a U-shape. Important that students have enough space for their role-playing.

Step 1. (During Class)

Prepare students for the role play: explain the rules, method and the objective of the exercise.

Step 2. (During Class)

Mention the set data and map out the given case. Distribute the roles over the students. Give the students a good description of their role and give them time to prepare themselves for the case and their role. Ask the students to change roles after a certain period of time.

Optionally: create an extra role as observer, so students could learn from each other by observing. Let the observer provide peerfeedback. Otherwise peerfeedback could be provided using Traintool.

Step 3. (Evaluation)

As a teacher look for any interesting cases and provide feedback in a plenary discussion.
