Assignment Station

During this learning activity students rotate in groups between different stations to answer different questions posted. Students can discuss answers, but also move around to stay active. The goal is to let students apply knowledge.

During this learning activity students rotate in groups between different stations to answer different questions posted. Students can discuss answers, but also move around to stay active. The goal is to let students apply knowledge.  

The activity takes about 30 to 60 minutes and could be done with maximum of 60 students. It could be used as a blended learning activity.

Supplies needed

  • Answer sheet
  • Assignments/questions for stations  

Set-up classroom

Provide students with plenty of space to move from one station to another. Place the stations properly apart, so students do not disturbe each other. A large classroom could be suggested. 

Optionally: A Teaching & Learning Lab could be suggested due to its flexible furniture. Students can write on Whiteboard walls and tables are moveable. Otherwise a Learning plaza could be used when working in bigger groups.

Step 1. (Preparation)

Compose questions or assignments for the assessment stations.

Step 2. (Preparation)

Make decisions on how students should note their answers. Create optional answer sheets or provide another way to note answers.

Step 3. (Preparation)

Set up the classroom in a proper way to use during the learning activity. 

Step 4. (During class)

Instruct students about the learning activity. Allocate groups of students to an assessment station which is the starting point for them. 

When working in pairs of groups: divide the students. 

Step 5. (During class)

Let students start at a specific station and set a time to rotate to the next station.

Step 6. (During class)

Let students rotate until they have participated at every station.

Step 7. (Evaluation)

Let students eventually provide their answers in a plenary discussion. Give students key points to take away.

Provide multiple channels in Microsoft Teams where all students could rotate through. These channels are the stations. Provide each channel with an assignment/question.

Set up the Microsoft Teams in a proper way to use during the learning activity. Students should be able to access all channels and assignments/questions. 

Step 4. (During class)
