Learning activity

Concrete Images

Ask student to state a concrete image/scene/event/moment that they find relevant to the topic. List these on the board. Ask students to find themes or patterns, missing points, etc. Then move the dis-cussion to analysis with a common collection of facts. 

Optionally: Use Pitch2Peer, so students can hand in their concrete image before class. Use the ‘Submission only’-option. As a teacher you can share all the images during class. More information regarding Pitch2Peer can be found here. 

On-campus

The activity takes about 10-30 minutes to complete and could be done with more than 60 students in an on-campus setting. 

Students could search for a concrete image at home, making it a blended learning activity.

Supplies Needed

  • A place to gather and post the concrete image/scene/event/moment 
  • Literature
  • Optionally: Pitch2Peer

Set-up Classroom

A simple classroom set-up, such as a U-shape or rows is sufficiënt. 

Step 1. (Preparation)

Select a topic about which students have to provide a concrete image. 

Step 2. (During Class)

Inform students during the tutorial session about the activity 

Step 3. (During Class)

Provide students with some time to find a proper image. Gather the images (e.g. by mailing, creating a shared Microsoft Teams). 

Step 4. (Evaluation)

The concrete images are discussed in a plenary discussion. Try to find common patterns, themas or missing information. Provide key-notes to take home.

Provide students with some time to find a proper image. Gather the images from students online/on-campus using Microsoft Whiteboards is advised.

The concrete images are discussed in a plenary discussion. Try to find common patterns, themas or missing information. Provide key-notes to take home.
