Learning activity

Idea Line-up

During this learning activity students are asked a question with a spectrum of responses. Students then take a stance on where they stand on the line – literally.  In this way you could see the understanding/decision of students quite clearly.

On-campus

The activity could take about 10 minutes and could be done with maximum of 30 students. Otherwise, the line could be too crowded.

Manual

Supplies needed

  • A way to present a question to the whole class (e.g. PowerPoint)

Set-up classroom

Provide students with plenty of space to create a line, you can put the tables aside if possible. Students could end up crowded if not a lot of room is provided. A large classroom could be suggested.
Optionally: Using a Teaching & Learning Lab could be suggested, due to its flexibility in furniture.

Step 1. (Preparation)

Compose questions which have a spectrum of possible options (e.g. linear scale, such as happiness, satisfactory or a number).

Step 2. (Preparation)

Prepare the classroom. Create plenty of space.

Step 3. (During class)

Instruct students about the learning activity. Let students stand up and move to the line.

Step 4. (During class)

Provide students with the question and let them take a stand on the line. Students could overlap when standing on the line.

Step 5. (Evaluation/During class)

When students have taken a stand, ask students to state their reasoning. And share their thoughts with the group.

Step 6. (During class)

Repeat the cycle till all the questions are answered.

Step 2. (Preparation)

Prepare the Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Whiteboard. Draw multiple lines and state the questions above the lines. So the question is presented to the whole group

Step 3. (During class)

Instruct students about the learning activity. Let students navigate to the Microsoft Whiteboard while in the meeting.

Step 4. (During class)

Provide students with the question and let them take a stand on the line by writing down their name. Students could overlap when standing on the line.
