Educational project

Interprofessional feedback in health professions education

The project aims to develop a training in actionable interprofessional feedback, as a main component of interprofessional communication and collaboration, for medicine and nursing students. This feedback training will help students establish an individual interprofessional learning objective for themselves, which they can then work to achieve during their clinical work placements. This ultimately promotes cooperation between (future) healthcare professionals down the road.

Background

Healthcare requires what the World Health Organization (WHO) calls a ‘collaborative practice-ready workforce’. Problematically, implementation of interprofessional education in which ‘students from two or more different professions learn from, with and about each other to improve collaboration and quality of care’, is lagging behind.

Project description & goals

The project is a collaboration between the Schools of Medicine and Nursing of Utrecht University and the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. The project aims to develop a training in actionable interprofessional feedback, as a main component of interprofessional communication and collaboration, for medicine and nursing students. In addition, two interprofessional simulations will be developed to serve as suitable settings to deliver this feedback training. The feedback training will result in a personal interprofessional learning goal for students to be followed-up during subsequent clinical placements.

Expected results

  • The development of learning goals and rubric for interprofessional feedback training and simulations;
  • Design for:
    1. interprofessional feedback training (to be newly developed), and
    2. for the associated simulations, to be built upon experiences and evaluations of the current interprofessional education;
  • Faculty training in developing students’ interprofessional feedback skills;
  • Implementation of feedback training and simulations;
  • Formative and summative evaluations of the feedback training and simulations;

The project contributes to educating a collaborative ready workforce by training students in interprofessional feedback.
